What to do in Royan ?

Royan and the area of Poitou Charentes has many different things that lots of activities.

Swimming and beach

Access to the beach is via a stairway cut into the rocks, just across the street opposite to the villa. The size of the beach depends on the tide sometimes a small beach, even fully covered by waters when tide has high coefficient, and at low tide a large beach. The larger part of the beach is always accessible by stairs at 100 m from the house.

Watersports

The Port is a 15 minute walk away, where you can hire sailboats and water sports equipment. The port is well worth a visit at sunset to enjoy the view, and maybe to enjoy dinner at one of the many excellent restaurants.

Tennis

The villa is only 400 metres away from the superb Tennis Club, "le Garden Tennis Club", which features 11 outdoor claycourts. Overlooking the sea, this tennis club was home to the French Davis Cup team. The Tennis Club welcomes non-members, and courts can be rented by the hour or by seasonal pass. The Club offers Tennis lessons, individual or group, and will help you to find tennis partners if needed.

Spa

Golf

There is a superb Golf Club at Maine Gaudin only 15 minutes drive away. The course is interesting - long, and set amidst a forest of pines by the sea.  The fairways are on the natural dunes, and offer beautiful views: in the distance the lighthouse of Cordouan, and the closer lighthouse at La Coubre. A very interesting compact 6 holes for practice, with a warm welcoming clubhouse and a good restaurant.

Dining

Royan is at the start of the South West region of France known for its plaisirs de la table (dining), where you can enjoy excellent fresh seafood at the many superb fish restaurants, and also creperies and brasseries. The region is famous for Marennes-Oleron Oysters, the estuary of the Seudre, the smallest river in Europe, is a part of the Marennes-Oleron basin. The green oyster country's fame is due to the quality of the oyster beds which produce oysters with a beautiful green colour, well appreciated by consumers, the "Pineau des Charentes" and Cognac.

Sightseeing

Royan offers a very large collection of 50' architecture. Facing the sea behind an arena of sand, the new town of Royan is bathed in sunlight. The unpretentious city was designed by a team of architects lead by Corbusier and inspired by the Modern movement and the Athens Charter. The urban architectural style was typical of the construction in the period after the war. An open air museum.
